Nikita McLean – Level 4 Information Systems Business Analyst at AXA UK
“It is a lot of hard work, but the confidence you gain is invaluable.”
What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?
“The best advice I can give to someone considering an apprenticeship is that you need to be prepared and willing to put in the time and effort, whilst still taking the time to enjoy it.
It is a lot of hard work and can be stressful to manage priorities with work, however the confidence you gain is invaluable, and I personally know I will be proud of the achievement at the end.”
What made you decide to do an apprenticeship?
“I decided to do an apprenticeship because I knew it would allow me to learn the right skills, use them in the most effective way and allow me to develop myself and others.”
Have you applied your new knowledge to your role in the workplace?
“The thing that I have learnt that has been most appropriate to my role so far has been stakeholder analysis and management, which has been very valuable. It has enabled me to think more about how to manage specific types of stakeholders and how to recognise potential issues.
As I am brand new to my role, learning about Business Activity Models has also been useful, because applying this technique allows me to find out more about the system and process as well as the stakeholders and their perspectives.
Time management has also been a key learning; it is not something we have been taught, but the ability to adapt to changing priorities within work and the apprenticeship whilst working to deadlines has made me more organised and nudged me to be more effective at communicating.”
Do you have any more comments about The ATP?
“My ATP trainer is very knowledgeable and has the ability to take textbook explanations and make them understandable, with real-life scenarios and stories, which makes the learning more applicable and engaging.
My mentor is amazing and very supportive – she has been helpful with any query or concern I have had and I know if I have any worries or questions she will always try to help.”
